On September 4, in the 2024 South Africa-China Presidential Business Forum, China Great Wall Industry Corporation, a subsidiary of China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Sasol Limited, a South African international chemical and energy company. The partnership aims to jointly advance technological cooperation to assist Sasol in achieving its carbon reduction goals in South Africa.

The South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, several South African government ministers and provincial governors, the China's Ambassador to South Africa Wu Peng, and the South Africa's Ambassador to China Siyabonga Cwele attended the Forum.

During the South Africa-China Presidential Business Forum, Mr Hu Zhongmin, the Chairman of CGWIC, and Dr Sarushen Pillay, the Executive Vice President of Sasol, signed the memorandum of understanding in the presence of senior South African officials and business partners, celebrating a significant milestone in the collaboration between the two companies.

Dr Sarushen Pillay said, "The signing of this Memorandum of Understanding is a culmination of discussions undertaken between the two parties, which have been ongoing since 2023. SASOL believes that the signing of this document will also enable both companies to explore collaborative areas that support SASOL’s commitment to meet its decarbonization and sustainability objectives at our operations in South Africa."

Mr Hu Zhongmin added, "Over the years, China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation (CASC) has been dedicated to applying advanced aerospace technologies to coal chemistry, petrochemicals, energy conservation, and environmental protection, contributing significantly to national economic and social development, modernization, and scientific and technological progress. As the international platform of the CASC, CGWIC actively engages in overseas exchanges and collaborations, striving to continually promote the global outreach of aerospace technology application industries. This collaboration not only efficiently facilitate the transformation of traditional energy enterprises but also provide South African enterprises with Chinese solutions infused with Chinese wisdom, a vital path for achieving mutually beneficial and cooperative development between enterprises of both nations."

Under the guidance of CASC, CGWIC and Sasol initiated discussions on strategic cooperation in 2023, aiming to introduce advanced aerospace technologies and equipment to South Africa, contributing to sustainable energy development and the achievement of carbon reduction goals. This collaboration leverages the strengths and expertise of both companies in technological innovation, facilitating the transformation and upgrading of Sasol's core operations to fulfill its corporate responsibilities of carbon reduction and carbon neutrality. The signing signifies the official commencement of the strategic cooperation between the two companies, the firm commitment to achieving the stated objectives, and a crucial step in addressing energy and environmental challenges.
